Why I won’t be watching the Olympics.

August 8, 2008

Two reasons. First and foremost, is the Olympic coverage. 20 minutes of Oprah style, tear jerking, over the top, athlete bios, 20 minutes of commercials and 5 minutes of actual sports. It’s horrible. And the bios are all the same and play out like an episode of “Behind the Music”. Talented Athlete shows promise, something tragic happens and they over come this tragedy to make it onto the Olympic team.

Every time the Olympics come around, I get excited only to get pissed off by the coverage (or lack their of).

Then there’s this:

The USOC was sorry — so very sorry — that its band of cyclists embarrassed China by arriving at the Beijing airport wearing black pollution masks that made them look like stage-coach robbers.

“It wasn’t the best judgment,” said Jim Scherr, CEO of the USOC. “The athletes understand that now.

..and this:

BEIJING — A charter airplane carrying the White House press corps was detained for nearly three hours Friday at Beijing’s international airport not long after President Bush arrived to attend the Olympic Games.

The flight crew of the Northwest Airlines 747 had been expecting to park at a VIP terminal, but after landing was instead directed by the control tower to a normal international gate.

Fuck the Chinese government. Why in the hell is the USOC running around wetting their pants that the Chinese government was “embarrassed” that our cyclists were protecting their lungs? Why are they “sorry — so very sorry –“. Fuck the USOC too. Sorry my ass. You are supposed to represent the American athletes not kowtow to the Chinese government. The Chinese government invited the world in, we didn’t knock. We didn’t pollute up their air, they did that all by their lonesome.

Let’s be very clear with what this is about. When the Chinese government is embarrassed, it means something didn’t follow their script. While it’s easy to control, and micro manage a people who are used to living under a repressive govenment. It’s not so easy to control people who aren’t, as the Chinese are going to find out. The Chinese government is going to be embarrassed a lot in the coming weeks. If we don’t stop all the kowtowing, there are going to be a lot of sore backs and knees.

a meme in the making. In addition to the meme madness overtaking Balloon Juice at the moment (my first submission). I thought’d I’d do something a bit more topical as well (and I also needed a place to stash the picture so I could link to it over there.

One of the finest peice of snark this election.

tbone a frequent commenter at Balloon Juice on Hillary’s Bosnia experience:

As bullets clawed the air around us and screams echoed down the rubble-strewn tarmac, I felt almost peaceful.

It was a simple mission, they had told me – get in, shake a few hands and mouth a few platitudes, get out. Simple. Yeah.

Things had started going wrong while we were still in the air and only gotten worse from there. So here we were, pinned down, choking on the acrid tang of cordite and the heady scent of human blood. The mission was even simpler now: survive. Whatever the cost, survive.

There was a grunt and a clatter of equipment as Sinbad threw himself down at my side. Sweat glistened on his bare arms, and I could see tendons contracting and relaxing as he squeezed off bursts from his M14. The motion was hypnotic, like a snake about to strike. Perhaps, when all this was over-

No. Concentrate. Focus on the mission. Survive.

Read the whole thing. A true masterpiece of snark. I only wish I could be as good some day.
